Adjusting to the New Normal

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck last year, the whole world was swept into a frenzy. Adjustments were made to different aspects of our lives and daily routines and this included our work. I was among those who lost their jobs due to the pandemic but fortunately for me, I got another. As was the case with most workers at the time, I had to work from home. It’s been 11 months and I am still adjusting to the new normal.

In all honesty, I always wished and prayed to work from home given my area of expertise. Living and working in a city like Lagos will wear you out in all ways so working from home was always a dream for me. You see, it’s said that one should be careful about what they wish for but it’s beyond being careful. When praying for what you want, also pray for the grace to handle it when you get it.

Working from home has its advantages which I can’t possibly deny. For one, I no longer experience traffic jams and the whole madness of daily commute in Lagos. I have more control over my time which is such a huge plus because I am a nightcrawler who does most of her work at nighttime.

On the flip side, the power supply is the greatest challenge of working from home in a country like Nigeria. It is frustrating and we are yet to have systems in place to cater to those working from home. Some employers tend to act oblivious about the power supply situation which is sad. As such, a chunk of your pay goes into generating power for yourself which shouldn’t be. Anyway, we move.

Making Adjustments

I prayed for it and I got it. It’s been a worthwhile experience and I have had to make lifestyle changes to accommodate this change. Some were spontaneous while the rest were forced like trying to be awake and alert at 8 am because I most times work into the night. I’m trying my possible best to start working out because I sit for hours without even realizing it which is unhealthy. I basically do some stretches, neck, shoulder and, back exercises. I also take walks occasionally but I’m trying to be better. It’s easy to get sucked up in your routine but intentionality is what helps. I have also added weight and no, my diet didn’t change. I even eat lesser than I used to but it is what it is.

Going AWOL was intentional even though I didn’t plan to be away for so long. The break was much needed to enable me to put some things in perspective and to just rest. My number one hobby has turned into a full-time job so it was necessary to strike a balance and avoid burnout. I missed writing here and hitting publish but I’m back now.

So far, So good

Do I miss working in an office space? Yes, I do but not entirely. I miss dressing up to work. Omg! I miss having to plan my outfits for the week during the weekend and having everything set. I miss seeing my colleagues but we interact over the internet. It’s all interaction nonetheless.

I may never have to work in an office again because apparently, I can get my work done anywhere. Who knows, things may change again and I’d find myself in an office space. Until then, this is my new normal.

If you work from home like me, how has the experience been? Do you prefer it to work in an office space? Which has proven to work best for you? Please feel free to share with me in the comments section. Hope you have all been well. I missed you all and it feels good to be back.

Be safe and have the best week ahead.
