Mid-Year Thoughts

2020. Saying it out loud feels and sounds good. Maybe it’s because of the repetition of the number 20 but it just sounds right. Sounding right and feeling right are obviously two different things.

We know that there’s nothing new under the sun but with the events of this past week, I can’t help but wonder about humanity. What is wrong? Are we not growing? What have we learned and refused to unlearn or relearn? Are we really in the end times? What more are we to expect from 2020?

This week’s post was supposed to be fun and upbeat but there’s nothing fun about what’s been happening recently. People were murdered in Southern Kaduna and it was as if nothing happened. A 16 year old girl, Tina, was shot and killed by a police officer here in Lagos. Uwa was raped and murdered in church at Benin City. George Floyd was harassed, oppressed and killed by police officers in the USA. All these happened within a week.

No doubt, worse things may have happened in the past that we’re unaware of but with the prevalence of social media, it’s all coming to our attention- straight up in our faces. I barely watch the news lately but I couldn’t escape it this time because it’s all over social media which my work is centered on.

Rape is demonic. That’s the best way I can put it. Only a monster will feel good while violating the body, mind and soul of another. Nobody is entitled to another’s body. It doesn’t make any sense. #StopRapingWomen!!!

Where did we go wrong in the upbringing of our boys? Why do some of them feel so entitled to a woman’s body? Why do we put more pressure on our girls? “Don’t wear this…it’s too short, it’s too revealing…your cleavage this, your cleavage that…” There’s a lot of relearning to do.

Uwa was not “indecently dressed”. She wasn’t in “the wrong place at the wrong time”. The 11 year old who was raped in Jigawa by 12 men didn’t “show cleavage”. Toddlers who are raped have zero sex appeal. There’s a huge problem with our society and if we don’t stand up to challenge the status quo and change the narrative, we’re setting a bad precedent for our children and the next generation. In your own little way, speak up and condemn evil acts. Silence is not an option here. I pray that Uwa and other rape victims get the justice they deserve.

2020 has had me in my feelings more times than I can remember. As we approach the 2nd half of the year, I pray and hope that there would be a total turnaround. We’ve had enough of the bad news and it’s like it keeps getting worse as each month passes.

I want us to continue being positive and hopeful despite the times we’re in. I believe that 2020 will end better than we expect. On a lighter note, let’s assume that the world is purging itself and carrying out a system overhaul. 💩 I just imagined mother earth in the toilet doing her thing. 🙃

How have you been this past week? How do you keep your mental health in check? For those of you still working from home, how are you doing? Tired of the new normal? If you’ve resumed at your office, how is the commute to and fro work like? Let’s talk below in the comments section. Hope you’re still keeping safe. We will get through this. 🤗💛

Sending you big hugs. We’ll be fine. 🤗🤗

    You have said it all.
The situation now is quite disheartening to say the least.I take solace in the fact that social media is exposing this rot and indirectly creating awareness to a lot that sees this s a farce. This generation like you said needs to change the narrative and refute this entitlement mentality of our boy children and emphasise the need to respect the feminine gender.

Individualism is the new normal hence the steady festering of social ills. Perhaps, with social media, we can reconnect and rediscover the essence of communal living. This is one of the antidote to this fractured world.

Good words you have penned down Ogo.

      1. Ogochukwu

Hmm…food for thought. Individualism is really at an all time high. Thank you very much, Chimezie.

Social media has been a blessing in many ways. Hopefully, we will get it right with our children when the time comes.

God help us. Our world needs God right now more than ever. The evil is so damn suffocating.

You’re right. Let’s assume the world is purging herself.

God have mercy upon us. This 2020 needs a refresh button.

Like, we need to restart or just be done with it better still. Thanks Toye.

I honestly dunno where we have failed in the raising of our boys honestly🤦🏽‍♀️. I don’t want to believe that its the parents fault but that “these boys” grew up and chose their path by behaving demonically. The whole issue is just too sad and i hope we can in our own little way try to change the status quo by letting all the “boys” know and learn that there is no such thing as an “uncontrollable urge”.

My tired is tired abeg 😔🤦‍♀, I pray we have the strength to get to the end of this year because I can’t wait to see the end of the year. I have seen and heard enough bad news to last me a lifetime this past 6months.

      1. Ogochukwu

I can relate with the tiredness. May God continue to strengthen us. Sending you hugs 🤗

    2. Ogochukwu

Yes, we have to get it right with our children when the time comes. This madness has to end. Thanks Ava.

Ordinarily after each football, they show the highlights of the game to show eventful parts of match. So far so good, 2020 has been doing numbers, everything back to back is a hit. O por, it’s too much. Weird how 31st December, we looked forward to this year but see how it’s running fast not caring whether we have accomplished things. You wake up and before you know it’s 12:27pm. As long as there’s no 👽 invasion or 🧟‍♂️ upraising, all would be fine hopefully

    1. Ogochukwu

😂 Alien invasion. That would be the height. I pray we see the end of the year and not the other way round. It’s been tough. Thanks for stopping by, Joey.
