COVID-19 is the most popular topic all over the world at this moment. We all know the drill; social distancing, stay at home, wash your hands regularly etc. The whole world is locked down. Dark times.
I reside in Lagos state, Nigeria and the federal government ordered that my city should be locked down for 14 days. The next day after the announcement was as expected. There was a frenzy. The markets were buzzing with last minute shoppers and traders who were ready to take advantage.
It was the perfect day for most traders. It was a case of, “if you no dey buy, drop am…” The prices of perishable goods tripled. Na wa oo! Is this what the “end” of the world is like? I thought to myself. Survival of the fittest pockets/wallets.
Agreed, the government doesn’t care about us but what about me and you? Do we care about each other? We’re quick to judge the government and criticize their policies and how they’re “bad”. But how do we help ourselves within our communities?
There are Christian fellowships in our marketplaces where pastors preach and bless traders before they commence their activities for the day. Isn’t it ironic that these same Christians would not think twice or bat an eyelid when cheating their customers? Christianity only applies to the witches and wizards in their villages who are to be consumed by the Holy Ghost’s fire and praying for poverty to die. Interesting.
The basis of Christianity remains the Love of God and the Love of Neighbor. One cannot stand without the other. The word “Christian” says it all. Are you Christ like? Are your business dealings separate from your Christianity? Being business savy is an admirable trait but when do we draw the line between making profit and cheating?
Today makes it day 13 of my self isolation/lockdown. I never imagined that it would last this long and life as I knew it would change immensely.
My mantra remains; This too, shall pass.
How are you holding up? What do you think about Christianity in the marketplace? Leave a comment below let’s get talking.
On point! Holy Ghost-Filled, Tithe-Paying, Demon-Destroying Christians! Garri; from 450 to 1300. This COVID era has and is revealing a lot of things….individually and as a people.
May God help us through this to become better individuals and a good country.
Hmm! Imagine the absurd price increase. A big AMEN to your prayer! ?
Beautifully written and you were right about the price inflation at the last minute shopping we had to do for this lockdown preparation. I wonder when we will stop blaming our govt for everything in this country and realise that the change begins truly with us when we start showing love to one another.
You know this! We need to truly love each other. That would go a long way in our country’s development. Thank you so much!
God bless you bae.. I expect Christian sellers or marketers to help other people in a time like this.. Why double ahbi triple to price of food items, when we have people dying of hunger, before the virus hits them! We will keep praying with our knees down, that this too shall pass..
Amen! Well said Precious. We will keep praying relentlessly. God help us.
This is seriously a nightmare, some of them even have a cross hanging outside their shops……
The citizens are the first problem Nigeria has before the govt and it’s leadership
The matter is deep rooted. We have a long way to go.
Thanks so much for the blog post.
