6 People You Need in Your Support System

These past 3 months have been a time of reflection for me. Remember this post where I talked about my feelings due to the COVID-19 lock down? Well, I’ve taken my time to take stock of the people in my life and the roles they play. I believe that family are not only those related to you by blood but people who have your back in any given situation. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary; a support system is a network of people who provide an individual with practical or emotional support.

Judging form past experiences, I’m convinced that everyone needs a support system irrespective of their relationship status. It is unfair to think that your partner, husband or wife should be your all in all. I get it, they’re your best friend but it’s quite a burden to expect them to perform the duties of these 6 people. Notwithstanding, they can fit into 2 or more roles but they can’t be all 6. Contrary opinions are welcome as usual. This is a learning space after all. Without further ado, I’m going to proceed and identify the 6 people you need in your support system.

  1. The Listener; It is one thing to find someone you can trust and another thing entirely for that person to be able to LISTEN. This person can serve as a sounding board who in turn feeds you with possible solutions to your problems. This is number 1 on my list because I feel everyone needs someone who actively listens not just for conversation sake, but because they actually care.
  2. The Coach; AKA your mentor. This person is all about pushing you to achieve your goals. They don’t want to hear you sulking or be a part of your pity party. They see a greater version of you that you don’t see yet and want you to arrive at a point where you will attain that greatness.
  3. The Cheerleader; This person will ginger you for Africa! He/she will make you feel on top the world, celebrate your victories no matter how little or insignificant and get you pumped to do more. They always want to see you win.
  4. The Social Butterfly; No sorrow zone! This person is here to show you a good time. After beating yourself up and feeling like a failure, they’ll offer to take you out for drinks or recommend a really nice movie, song or comedy skit. Good vibes only- we need a healthy dose of this.
  5. The Realist/Blunt Fellow; Trust me, you need this person. He/she doesn’t care about making you feel good by telling you what you want to hear. They tell you as it is. BLUNT. They want you to sit up and do better.
  6. YOU– I guess you didn’t see that coming. You need yourself to show up and constantly believe in yourself. Also, you need to realize that you need a support system in the first place. If not, these 5 people I mentioned will be non-existent.

Do you believe in support systems or you’re a one man army? Have you taken time to evaluate the roles of people in your lives? Do you have an addition or subtraction to make on this list? Please let me know in the comment section.

PS; I just want to say that one day, the power supply situation in Nigeria will improve because…hmm. That’s a topic of discussion for another day. June had a whole 5 weeks and I wasn’t about to put myself under pressure to drop this post yesterday because it was scheduled for the first week of July. Lol. I know my post days are Tuesdays and I will do my best to continue with it. Hope all is well with you and yours and you’re keeping safe?

Well I find this post really interesting especially the last part, without YOU, these 5 will be nonexistent. Also sometimes, these 5 qualities can be found in 1person, Maybe a best friend, or a Partner. Only those who truly love you, can possess such quality.

Thank you, Jnew. Having one person who possesses all these qualities will indeed be a blessing.

Hmmmmmm, I didn’t see that last part coming but it’s the truth, we need to be our number one fan before we expect anyone to do same.
This year has been a very intentional year for me personally as I have reviewed the people in my life and the role they play if I want it to continue.
I couldn’t just agree less with this post.
    Well-done!

It’s necessary to review those in our circle. We need to protect our inner peace and energy. Thanks a lot, Rebecca. 💛

I did not see the You ( me) part coming honestly. However it’s the truth I need me!

  4. Ava Anthony

I did not see the YOU part coming but immediately i did, i just smiled because truly that is me and i am sooooooooo glad that i have come to the realisation that i need me most of all to show up first before anything else. For the other 5..i can say i have 3our of those which are; listener, cheerleader and the blunt/realist. I need me a coach like mad and i also need a social butterfly like yesterday🤣. Lemme just say that the/a support system is a very important and very essential part of everyones’ life well except you are a one man mopol or an island.

Thank you Ogo..keep giving it to us💃🏽. As for NEPA lemme not say anything too until that day when you would..those people eh *arrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhh

😂 social butterflies are needed. Not every time seriousness. All work and no play is not ideal. Thank you so much Ava. 😊 NEPA needs divine intervention because…🤦🏽

We all need a support system in our lives, that can’t be overemphasized. I’ve got a LISTENER, a CHEERLEADER, a REALIST and most importantly ME, I really need a COACH and a SOCIAL BUTTERFLY like ASAP.
I find this topic very interesting and your blog generally. Keep up the good work! *smiles*
