I believe that there are basic things we should know how to fix in our homes before seeking the help of artisans or professionals. Most times, you may not even need sophisticated tools to fix these things. Something as common as your hands can be all you need for these quick fixes.
The internet is littered with innumerable quick fix videos that mostly play on fast speed and from personal experience, they don’t give the exact or expected results. I’m sure by now, you know I’m a huge fan of YouTube videos and I’ve taken my time to search for comprehensible short videos which I’ve linked in the list to serve as visual aids. Now, let’s jump right into it.
- How to replace and remove a gas cylinder valve- Imagine running out of cooking gas while making dinner and you need to remove the cylinder valve to change the cylinder. No need to imagine because this is something most of us have experienced. Removing the cylinder valve has proven to be a struggle that I can attest to and I know some of you can relate to this. It’s actually easier than you thought. Watch this video to show you how to not only remove the valve, but how to also prevent gas leakage.
2. How to unclog your kitchen sink without a plunger- Every home has a plunger- I can bet on that. But the truth is that the plunger only scratches the surface given the fact that it cannot melt those buildups of oil in the pipes. Typically, using hot/boiling water is one quick fix that majority of us are accustomed to but it doesn’t do justice to the pipes. In this video, you’ll learn how to make proper use of baking soda and vinegar to unclog your kitchen pipes.
3. Changing light bulbs the right way- Ever had a light bulb blow up after fixing it? That experience is traumatizing. It doesn’t necessarily have to do with how you fixed the light bulb as there are other determining factors like voltage and the quality of the light bulb. Nonetheless, it’s advisable that we should know how to properly fix a light bulb- what to do before, during and after fixing it. This video shows you everything you need to know.
4. How to hit nails into a wall (without hitting your fingers along with it)- The pain that follows when a hammer mistakenly hits your thumb or index finger while trying to hit a nail in a wall is immense and undeniable. It would be awkward calling a carpenter to come hit a nail in your wall because you want to put up a picture frame. For this quick fix, all you need is a clothespin aka wooden peg. Please note that this works best for wooden wall panels. Watch how it’s done here.
5. How to fix a button- 80s and 90s kids in the house, remember when our moms used Danish cookies container as sewing kits? Well, there are now actual sewing kits sold virtually everywhere and you can do well to purchase one for yourself. Knowing how to fix a button that comes lose on a piece of clothing is so basic and gender neutral. I’ve seen some people abandon a shirt or pair of trousers just became a button went missing. This video shows you 3 ways to fix a button.
There you have it! Do you know how to fix any of the things listed above? If yes, please share any useful tips/hacks with me below. Are you the type who doesn’t bother with fixing stuff by yourself at home? You should have a rethink.
If you missed my previous post, kindly check it out here and also feel free to share with others. Thank you. Enjoy the rest of the week!
I hope I will gather enough liver to change the bulb 😂….thanks for sharing the DIY tips 🤗
Changing bulbs scares me to be honest. You’re not alone. 😂🤗
I think its safe to say i like to fix things…so long as there is a screw in that thing..i just can’t help but unscrew it to screw it back🤭. From the changing of light bulbs to the buttons to the hammer and nail and then the unclogging of pipes and also the valve change, i’ve seen ‘em all😫..these things for me just comes with the territory and i am glad i was able to know these things. Growing up, there was no tool you needed that we didn’t have o hmm from screwdriver to rake to G/F clamps to spanners; we had them ..and i am very sure i would carry that to my house also. We all just need to know some of these things as they could come in handy most times eapecially that part of changing button🤦🏽♀️..i would think its so basic but yet so….
Omg! You sound so much like my elder sister. 😂 She can fix almost everything in her house. She has these tools you mentioned and I’m always in awe when I see her fix stuff. I’ll tell her I’ve found her second.😄
Why do I feel the list isn’t complete?
I think for the ladies it is essential we know how to turn on the generator and gauge the engine oil.
Aha! That too. Thanks for adding it to the list. 😄
