Pandemic or not, food and fashion must thrive. The turn out of events this past year were highly unpredictable and interesting. From virtual fashion shows to the massive comeback of 90s fashion, 2020 was indeed memorable. Going by trends on social media and data from some retail fashion stores, I present the 2020 fashion trends roundup;

- The Train- This was hands down the most popular asoebi/owambe (Nigerian party) style in 2020. Something about the train oozes elegance and it goes well with both lace and ankara fabric. This trend is here to stay and I think it’ll dominate the first quarter of 2021 till something else takes over.

- Tie Dye- Who would have thought that a traditional way of decorating clothes would become a major fashion trend in 2020? I sure didn’t. The tie dye trend was everywhere and on almost anything that could be tied and dyed.

- Lounge Wear- Thanks to the work from home mandate due to the pandemic, there was an unusually high demand for lounge wears. Comfy and cozy are the best ways to describe this essential 2 piece set.

- Biker Shorts- Fashion is dynamic and for that reason, an item considered to be sportswear can become part of everyday fashion. This is the story of biker shorts. From observation, it seems to have replaced leggings but who knows? It’s fashion after all.

- Bucket Hats- Of all the trends this year, this one surprised me the most. This fashion accessory was a big deal in the late 90s to early 2000s and here we have it again in 2020.

- Shoulder Bags- Some call it a sling bag but whatever you know it as, it has come to stay. I remember getting one as a gift in 2010 but I didn’t place much value on it then because it wasn’t in vogue. Look at us now. This is one trend I absolutely love and I want to see more of it in 2021.

- Mini Bags- When Lizzo showed up at the American Music Awards in 2019 with her almost unnoticeable mini bag, she trended that night. What was a topic of ridicule somehow became a fashion trend in 2020 and the rest is history.

- Square-toe Footwear- With fashion, keep an open mind. Square-toe footwear were all the rave this year and with its wide acceptability, it is bound to trend in 2021.

- Square-neck Dresses & Tops- The squares didn’t come to play this year and dresses weren’t left out. This will definitely trend in 2021.

- Cuban Link Chain- Earrings, bracelets, rings and necklaces came in the Cuban link chain pattern and we were having it. This will be a major fashion trend in 2021 no doubt.

- Knotless Braids- This came and knocked crotchet braids off the charts. Knotless braids are easy to install from videos I’ve seen on YouTube and they definitely will be huge next year.

- Bone Straight Weaves- Do I even need to talk about this? Lol!

- Face Masks- The unforeseen fashion accessory of the decade! It just had to make it to this list whether we like it or not.
What a year in fashion! I’m super excited to see what 2021 holds for the fashion scene. I missed you guys! I was away for 3 weeks due to work related stuff but I’m back now. I’m working on a schedule that allows me to put out content here even though I have to be away for a little while. Consistency is key.
How are you preparing for the festivities? Christmas decorations are up, parties here and there especially weddings. No fireworks and harmattan in sight which makes it feel less Christmassy but regardless, it’s the season to be jolly. What fashion trend did it for you this year? Did I omit something from the list? Do let me know.
Compliments of the season!ππ½ππ₯
Yay!!! This year came with alot of things but still we are thankful.. For the fashion trends, I won’t miss the nose mask π, I am rocking my knotless braid. I’m still thinking of making the dress/skirt with a train(surprised I don’t even have one), I’m a lover of mini bags cos it’s so cuteπππ. I think that’s all for me, I’m so so looking forward to next year bayi, still can’t believe that Christmas is next week Fridayπ±π±π±π±ππππ
Yaay! ππ½ I’m also planning to make a skirt with the train too. 2021 is here already!! Merry Christmas in advanceπ€π
This year really came with its own fashion package but one thing that stood out for me is the knotless braid for those of us who have soft scalp, it made braids an easy to do hairstyle for us.
I also think there was a high trend of turtle neck this year and it made it seem it just got invented.
And yeeessssss, Christmas is less than 7days to go ππ
Yes, turtleneck too! Knotless braids is obviously a winnerππ½ Merry Christmas in advanceπ€π
